Wyoming Oversize & Overweight Permits for Heavy Haul
Wyoming permit rules, legal limits and escort triggers, and how we book heavy haul carriers for moves in and through the state.
Quick answer
Do I need a permit to move an oversize load in Wyoming?
Yes, once the load is wider than 8 ft 6 in, taller than 14 ft, or heavier than Wyoming's axle and gross tables allow, which reach 117,000 lbs on long multi-axle rigs. The Wyoming Highway Patrol issues permits online and at ports of entry: $25 for oversize, and 6 cents per ton per mile over legal for overweight, with a $40 minimum.

Heavy haul and oversize freight in Wyoming
Wyoming is a crossing state for heavy haul: I-80 runs from Utah through Rock Springs, Laramie and Cheyenne to Nebraska, I-25 runs north from Colorado through Cheyenne and Casper toward Montana, and I-90 crosses the northeast through Gillette and Sheridan. Wind energy components, oil, gas and coal mining equipment, and freight between the Midwest and the West Coast keep oversize loads moving. We book carriers for moves within Wyoming or across it.
Wind decides many Wyoming moves. The Highway Patrol restricts oversize loads in high winds and on snow and ice, closes some stretches to light, high-profile vehicles, and bars oversize and overweight loads whenever the chain law or a no-unnecessary-travel advisory is in effect. Every permitted load also stops at the first port of entry, so we plan the route and the weather window together before quoting.
What are the legal size and weight limits in Wyoming?
Under the oversize load regulations in Wyoming, a load above any of these limits needs a state oversize or overweight permit.
| Width | 8 ft 6 in |
|---|---|
| Height | 14 ft |
| Semitrailer length | 60 ft |
| Gross weight | 117,000 lbs |
| Single axle | 20,000 lbs |
| Tandem axle | 36,000 lbs |
Limits are set by W.S. 31-18-802. Wyoming's gross weight tables run up to 117,000 lbs on long, multi-axle rigs, though axle limits hold a typical five-axle tractor-semitrailer well below that; tandems may carry 36,000 lbs and semitrailers may be 60 ft long.
Who issues Wyoming oversize permits?
The Wyoming Highway Patrol issues permits through its Electronic Permitting System and at 14 ports of entry, which are staffed seven days a week, and Class B permits within the standard limits can be self-issued. Superloads go to the Overweight Loads Office in Cheyenne, which approves them on weekdays.
State permits cover Interstate, primary and secondary highways. City and county roads need approval from local officials, and each move must stop at the first port of entry that lies within 5 miles of the route.

What do Wyoming oversize and overweight permits cost?
- request_quote Oversize single trip: $25, plus 3 cents a mile for each foot by which the load passes 15 ft of width, 15 ft of height or 75 ft of single-unit length.
- request_quote Overweight: 6 cents per ton or part of a ton over legal, per mile traveled, with a $40 minimum.
- request_quote Very heavy loads may need route and structure analysis, and the permit issues only after WYDOT's costs are paid.
- request_quote Class D extended permits, for up to a year: $50 for oversize.
- request_quote Out-of-state trucks without Wyoming credentials buy IRP and IFTA trip permits at the first port.
Worked example: a 16 ft wide load on a 300-mile route
The base fee is $25, and the one foot over 15 ft adds 1 x 300 x $0.03 = $9, for $34. If the same load were also 10 tons over legal, the overweight fee would add 10 x 300 x $0.06 = $180 to the permit.
Wyoming pilot car and escort requirements
- local_police On two-lane primary and secondary highways, escorts ahead and behind are needed from 14 ft wide or 110 ft long, and for any load that has to use part of the oncoming lane.
- local_police Interstate and divided highways: one rear escort from 15 ft wide or 150 ft long.
- local_police Rear overhang of 25 ft or more: one rear escort on all highways.
- local_police Over 17 ft high: a front escort with a height-measuring device.
- local_police Escorts run about 1,000 ft from the load and keep two-way radio contact; cell phones do not count.
- local_police No certification is required of Wyoming escort drivers.
What hours can oversize loads move in Wyoming?
- calendar_today Oversize loads move in daylight, except loads up to 10 ft wide on Interstates and certain long single units, which may run at night when lighted.
- calendar_today There is no statewide weekend ban.
- calendar_today Holidays: escorted loads stop from sunset before Christmas, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Independence Day until sunrise after, and longer around three-day weekends.
- calendar_today Past 18 ft wide, loads keep off primary and secondary highways while school buses run and commuter traffic is heavy.
- calendar_today Teton Pass (WY-22) bars trailers from mid-November to April, and the Wind River Canyon tunnels cap loads at 18 ft high and 24 ft wide.
Seasonal weight limits in Wyoming
Wyoming has no frost law; WYDOT can lower weights on specific highways or bridges when needed and posts the reduced limits. Winter is governed by weather instead: oversize and overweight loads cannot move under the chain law or a no-unnecessary-travel advisory, and blow-over-prone loads must obey closures to light, high-profile vehicles, which carry a $1,000 fine for a first offense.
