South Dakota Oversize & Overweight Permits for Heavy Haul
South Dakota permit rules, legal limits and escort triggers, and how we book heavy haul carriers for moves in and through the state.
Quick answer
Do I need a permit to move an oversize load in South Dakota?
Yes, once the load is wider than 8 ft 6 in, taller than 14 ft or heavier than the axle and bridge-formula limits, with 80,000 lbs the cap on the Interstate. The South Dakota Highway Patrol issues permits through SDAPS for $25, and overweight loads add 2 cents per ton per mile over set thresholds. There are no weekend or holiday restrictions.

Heavy haul and oversize freight in South Dakota
South Dakota's oversize freight is wind energy, farm machinery and construction equipment, much of it crossing the state on I-90 from Sioux Falls through Mitchell and Rapid City toward Wyoming, or on I-29 along the eastern edge between Sioux City and North Dakota. Wind turbine components and grain equipment are common loads, and the Black Hills add tight mountain routes in the west. We book carriers for moves inside South Dakota or across it.
South Dakota has no weekend or holiday restrictions, but it is strict about daylight: any load wider than 10 ft, taller than 14 ft 6 in or needing an escort moves only in daylight. The Black Hills carry their own escort rules from 10 ft wide, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally closes routes to large loads each August, and spring load limits begin in mid-February, so the season and the route set the plan.
What are the legal size and weight limits in South Dakota?
Under the oversize load regulations in South Dakota, a load above any of these limits needs a state oversize or overweight permit.
| Width | 8 ft 6 in |
|---|---|
| Height | 14 ft |
| Semitrailer length | 53 ft |
| Gross weight | 80,000 lbs |
| Single axle | 20,000 lbs |
| Tandem axle | 34,000 lbs |
Limits are set by SDCL 32-22-3 to 32-22-16. Off the Interstate there is no fixed gross cap: the bridge formula and the axle and tire limits govern, and an annual $60 permit lets vehicles over 80,000 lbs use the Interstate up to those limits.
Who issues South Dakota oversize permits?
The South Dakota Highway Patrol's Motor Carrier Services issues oversize and overweight permits through SDAPS and its permit center, and SDDOT has to approve the route for every overweight permit. Reviews usually take up to two working days, longer for loads over 200,000 lbs, overweight loads wider than 12 ft, or loads more than 16 ft high.
State permits cover the state trunk highway system. Counties, townships and cities permit their own roads, and Meade County, for example, adds its own ban on wide or tall loads near Sturgis around the rally.

What do South Dakota oversize and overweight permits cost?
- request_quote Single trip permit, oversize or overweight: $25.
- request_quote Overweight ton-mile fee: 2 cents for each ton over the threshold for each mile on state highways, with thresholds from 40,000 lbs on 2 axles to 95,000 lbs on 7 or more.
- request_quote Annual and other extended permits: $60, including the one for running over 80,000 lbs on the Interstate.
- request_quote A book of 10 self-issuing single trip permits: $250.
- request_quote No separate superload, bridge analysis or escort fee is published.
Worked example: a five-axle, 120,000 lb load over 300 miles
The load is 35,000 lbs, or 17.5 tons, over the 85,000 lb five-axle threshold, charged as 18 tons. Over 300 miles of state highway that is 18 x 300 x $0.02 = $108, plus the $25 permit, for $133.
South Dakota pilot car and escort requirements
- local_police Wider than 10 ft on the listed Black Hills roads, US-16A, SD-87 and SD-244 among them: a front escort.
- local_police Over 16 ft wide on the Interstate: one escort behind the load. Over 16 ft on other listed Black Hills and southwest routes: a front escort.
- local_police Over 20 ft wide on all other state highways: one escort, ahead on two-lane roads and behind on divided highways.
- local_police Loads that reach more than 2 ft into another lane, or leave traffic unable to pass, need escorts and flaggers to hold traffic.
- local_police There is no height-based escort rule; the permit holder answers for every vertical clearance, including power lines and signals.
- local_police Escort vehicles carry amber lights and WIDE LOAD signs, and South Dakota sets no escort driver certification.
What hours can oversize loads move in South Dakota?
- calendar_today Daylight only for any load that needs an escort, is wider than 10 ft or taller than 14 ft 6 in, exceeds set lengths, or runs off the Interstate more than 2 miles from an interchange.
- calendar_today Loads under those limits can run at night on the Interstate.
- calendar_today South Dakota has no weekend or holiday restrictions.
- calendar_today Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, early to mid August: large loads in the five Black Hills counties (Custer, Fall River, Lawrence, Meade, Pennington) need SDDOT approval and move only from just before sunrise until 10 AM.
- calendar_today Oversize permits are void in visibility of half a mile or less and on roads slippery from snow, ice or frost, and the Highway Patrol suspends oversize movement in high winds.
Seasonal weight limits in South Dakota
South Dakota law cuts axle weights every year from February 15 to April 30, with each road authority setting and posting its own limits. SDDOT posts state segments at 6, 7 or 8 tons per axle, and in recent years only a few hundred miles of state highway have been posted; counties set and enforce their own. Limited overweight permits are still issued during the season with SDDOT route approval.
