Oklahoma Oversize & Overweight Permits for Heavy Haul
Oklahoma permit rules, legal limits and escort triggers, and how we book heavy haul carriers for moves in and through the state.
Quick answer
Do I need a permit to move an oversize load in Oklahoma?
Yes, once the load is wider than 8 ft 6 in, taller than 14 ft on state highways (13 ft 6 in on county roads) or heavier than 80,000 lbs on the Interstate. ODOT issues permits through OkiePROS: $40 for oversize, $40 plus $10 per 1,000 lbs over legal for overweight, and $80 plus the weight charge when the load is both.

Heavy haul and oversize freight in Oklahoma
Oklahoma sits on the routes between Texas and the Midwest: I-35 runs from the Red River through Oklahoma City to Kansas, I-40 crosses the state through Oklahoma City toward Arkansas and New Mexico, and I-44 links Lawton, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Oilfield and energy equipment, wind turbine components, farm machinery and construction machines make up much of its oversize freight. We book carriers for moves inside Oklahoma or across it.
Oklahoma's rules are loose on the route and strict on the calendar. Oversize loads move only in daylight, every permitted load stops on six holidays, and the Interstates in Oklahoma, Tulsa and Cleveland counties close to oversize loads at rush hour. Turnpike travel needs Oklahoma Turnpike Authority approval and Oklahoma City streets need the city's own sign-off, so we check both before quoting.
What are the legal size and weight limits in Oklahoma?
Under the oversize load regulations in Oklahoma, a load above any of these limits needs a state oversize or overweight permit.
| Width | 8 ft 6 in |
|---|---|
| Height | 14 ft |
| Semitrailer length | 59 ft 6 in |
| Gross weight | 80,000 lbs |
| Single axle | 20,000 lbs |
| Tandem axle | 34,000 lbs |
Limits are set by 47 O.S. 14-103 and 14-109. Off the Interstate the gross limit rises to 90,000 lbs, semitrailers up to 59 ft 6 in may run on the National Network, and county roads hold loads to 13 ft 6 in high.
Who issues Oklahoma oversize permits?
Permits come from ODOT's Size and Weight Permit Division, based in Oklahoma City with offices in Enid, Elk City and Tulsa, through OkiePROS, by phone or in person once the company profile is on file. A single trip permit runs up to 5 consecutive days, and overweight requests need to be in ODOT's hands 5 or more working days ahead of the move.
The permit covers state highways, Interstates and designated turnpikes, while any city or county segment printed on it is only a suggestion. Oklahoma City requires its own approval for loads on its streets, and the carrier's permit service handles the state permit and any local sign-off together.

What do Oklahoma oversize and overweight permits cost?
- request_quote Single trip oversize: $40.
- request_quote Overweight: $40 plus $10 for each 1,000 lbs over the legal limit.
- request_quote Oversize and overweight: $80 plus $10 per 1,000 lbs, because the two are charged as separate permits.
- request_quote Newly manufactured items 16 to 23 ft wide: a $500 Special Movement fee on top of the permit.
- request_quote Card payments add 4%, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol escorts are billed at full cost.
Worked example: a 14 ft wide, 110,000 lb load on an Interstate route
The load is both oversize and overweight, so the base is $80. It is 30,000 lbs over the 80,000 lb Interstate limit, which adds 30 x $10 = $300, for $380. Paying by card adds 4%, bringing it to $395.20, and one escort is required at this width.
Oklahoma pilot car and escort requirements

- local_police Wider than 16 ft: escorts at both ends on all roads, and no Interstate at any point of the trip.
- local_police At 15 ft 9 in tall or more: escorts at both ends, a height pole, and advance contact with every utility and railroad on the route.
- local_police Over 90 ft long: a front escort on two-lane roads, and front and rear once the load passes 100 ft.
- local_police Escort drivers need Oklahoma certification through the Oklahoma State University course, or a reciprocal state's certificate for non-residents.

- calendar_today Holidays: no permitted load, oversize or overweight, moves on Christmas, New Year's Day, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, Labor Day or Independence Day.
- calendar_today Rush hours in Oklahoma, Tulsa and Cleveland counties: no oversize loads on the Interstate from 7 to 9 AM or 3:30 to 6:30 PM on weekdays.
- calendar_today No permitted loads in downtown Tulsa, and none on I-235 between I-40 and I-44 in Oklahoma City.
Seasonal weight limits in Oklahoma
Oklahoma has no frost law or spring thaw season. ODOT and local authorities can lower weights or close roads when weather would damage them, once signs are posted, and ODOT keeps a red and green map of load-posted bridges. The Red River crossings need the most care: the OK-78 bridge into Texas takes no overweight loads, and several crossings need a Texas permit first.
