How Much Does a Bulldozer Weigh?
Operating and shipping weights for 13 dozers, from compact John Deere models to the Cat D11
Quick answer
How much does a bulldozer weigh?
Small dozers weigh about 18,000 to 31,000 lbs, mid-size machines 37,000 to 49,000 lbs, and large dozers 65,000 to 90,000 lbs in operating trim. At the top, Caterpillar lists the D10 at 154,888 lbs and the D11 at 235,044 lbs operating. Shipping weights are lower, because the blade, ripper and other parts often travel separately.

Operating weight is the dozer ready to work, with fluids, an operator and its standard blade and ripper. Shipping weight, where the maker publishes one, is the machine as it travels, usually without the blade.

Weights from each maker's spec sheet or brochure, checked October 2026; t is metric tons (2,204.6 lbs). Shipping weight is the maker's published transport weight where one exists. Gross adds a tractor and RGN of 35,000 to 45,000 lbs, compared with the 80,000 lbs federal gross limit; axle and bridge-formula limits can also apply.
Cat D6 weight
Caterpillar lists the D6 at 48,788 lbs operating weight with a 6SU push-arm blade, HDXL undercarriage and 24 in shoes. Its shipping weight is 42,280 lbs: the cab, drawbar, blade lift cylinders, lubricants, coolant and 10% fuel, with the blade off.
Across the tracks the D6 is 8 ft 10 in wide, and 10 ft 10 in with the blade. At 42,280 lbs on a truck and RGN it is borderline on gross weight, so whether it moves without an overweight permit depends on the rig.
Cat D8 weight
The D8 weighs 87,083 lbs operating with an SU blade and single-shank ripper. Caterpillar's shipping weight of 76,126 lbs keeps the ripper, cab and blade lift cylinders on and leaves the blade off.
That shipping weight alone puts a truck and RGN at roughly 111,000 to 121,000 lbs gross, so a D8 always travels on an overweight permit. It is 9 ft 2 in wide over the tracks and 11 ft 7 in tall, about 13 ft 7 in on a 2 ft deck.
Blade on or off: how much width the blade adds
On most dozers the blade is wider than the tracks, so it sets the load's width when it stays on. Shipping the blade on a second truck can keep the base machine under an escort threshold.
| Model | Width over the tracks | Width with the blade |
|---|---|---|
| Cat D5 | 8 ft 2 in | 10 ft 9 in |
| Komatsu D61PXi-24 | 9 ft 10 in | 12 ft 8 in |
| Cat D6 | 8 ft 10 in | 10 ft 10 in |
| Cat D8 | 9 ft 2 in | 13 ft 3 in |
| Cat D10 | 12 ft 4 in | 16 ft 2 in |
| Cat D11 | 14 ft 4 in | 20 ft 10 in |

How dozer weight decides the permit
With a 35,000 to 45,000 lb tractor and RGN, a dozer has to stay under roughly 35,000 to 45,000 lbs for the rig to remain under the 80,000 lb federal gross limit. Compact dozers clear that easily, mid-size machines such as the D5, D61 and D6 sit on the line, and D8-class dozers and up always need overweight permits.
The D10 and D11 go further: even stripped for shipping they weigh 111,739 and 134,755 lbs, which pushes most rigs past routine permit limits into superload rules in states such as Ohio.
